Schonert says O ‘wasn’t simple enough’

The Buffalo Bills remain a team in turmoil as former offensive coordinator Turk Schonert told a Buffalo television station Friday afternoon he was fired because the Bills’ offense “wasn’t simple enough” for coach Dick Jauron.

“He wants a ‘Pop Warner’ offense,” Schonert said in a phone interview with WIVB. “He limited me in formations, and limited me in plays. He’s been on my back all offseason.”

Schonert said he was fired by Jauron during a Friday morning meeting. ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen reported Saturday that Bills owner Ralph Wilson Jr. had a meeting at his Detroit home with Jauron, general manager Russ Brandon, quarterback coach Alex Van Pelt and running back coach/running game coordinator Eric Studesville.

A Bills spokesperson would neither confirm nor deny a meeting occurred.

Friday afternoon in a press conference, Jauron said Schonert was fired for a “lack of productivity,” though he also said the fault was not all Schonert’s.

The Bills’ offensive starters failed to score a touchdown in five preseason games after ranking 25th in the NFL in offense in 2008, Schonert’s first as the team’s play-caller.

Though nervous in taking over as the Bills new offensive coordinator, Van Pelt has the players behind him after several expressed concerns about Schonert.

Both quarterback Trent Edwards and receiver Lee Evans supported the move after the team returned to practice Sunday to start preparing for its season opener at New England on Sept. 14. Both indicated players had voiced their concerns about the offensive sputters to coach Dick Jauron, who ultimately made the decision to fire Schonert on Friday.

“I think everybody had concerns about it,” Evans said. “I think the basis of it was that things weren’t getting done the right way. And that was the cause of the change.”

Jauron said while the firing of Schonert was a relatively new idea to him, it wasn’t one he wanted to sit on for long.

“When you make a decision you know when you should do it,” Jauron said. “I wasn’t thinking about firing him three days ago. I wasn’t thinking about it two weeks ago. And when you start to think about it, I think you need to move on it and do something. Clearly I believe it’s the right thing to do.”

Schonert said the problem was the complexity of his system.

“He [Jauron] told me the offense wasn’t simple enough for him,” Schonert said. “We had too many formations, too many plays. I didn’t simplify it to his liking.”Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Winnipeg not pursuing Pacman

Adam “Pacman” Jones won’t be playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after all.

The CFL team announced Wednesday it has ended its pursuit of the controversial ex-NFL cornerback, one day after multiple reports said Jones would play for the team.

“It is unfortunate that this situation became public; however, our position has remained consistent,” Blue Bombers coach Mike Kelly said in a statement. “We will pursue athletes that we believe will contribute to our organization on and off the field.

“We have completed our assessment and due diligence and at this time we will not be pursuing the services of Adam Jones.”

Jones’ attorney, Worrick Robinson, told The Associated Press on Tuesday he had been in “consistent negotiations” with a CFL team, but wouldn’t say which one.

Jones is a former first-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans who has twice been suspended by the NFL for off-field incidents — including for the entire 2007 season — and was released in February by the Dallas Cowboys.

Pierce refuses to discuss Burress

The Plaxico Burress case is seemingly decided, and Antonio Pierce still isn’t saying much about it.

Pierce had plenty to say Monday about the New York Giants after their dismal second preseason game, but the middle linebacker refused to comment on his former teammate’s decision last week to plead guilty to a weapons charge and accept two years in prison.

With time off for good behavior, Burress will have to serve at least 20 months. His sentencing is set for Sept. 22.

“I am not talking about that,” Pierce said during a lunch break at the Giants training camp at the University at Albany.

In the nine months since Burress accidentally shot himself in a Manhattan nightclub, Pierce has said very little about his role in the incident.

Authorities have said Pierce drove Burress to a hospital and then drove the gun to his own home in New Jersey and arranged for it to be taken later to Burress’ home.

Pierce testified last month before a grand jury, which declined to indict him for his role in the incident.

Since then, the only thing Pierce has said about the matter is that he acted reasonably, responsibly and instinctively in aiding his now former teammate, and that he had no regrets about his actions.

In Monday’s comments, Pierce talked only about the Giants on the field. The one question asked about Burress, he turned aside.

But he had plenty to say about football in the wake of the Giants’ embarrassing 17-3 loss to the Bears in Chicago.

Pierce, who is nursing a sore foot, watched the game on television and saw New York’s usually solid defense give up scoring drives of 80 and 92 yards to the Bears’ first-team offense and allow 150 yards rushing on 34 carries.

After watching tapes of the game, Pierce said there were too many mental errors, missed assignments and missed tackles.

“No need to panic,” he said. “If somebody else wants to push the panic button, they can. Antonio Pierce and the New York Giants will not do that. We’re going to go back and work hard. That’s what we are going to do. No need to push the panic button. Until they give the preseason Super Bowl away, we’re not worried about that. It’s a game, you learn from your mistakes.”

Pierce, who plans to practice this week, insisted that the Giants have two weeks to get everything straightened out on defense, starting with this weekend’s annual preseason game against the Jets. He also downplayed the injuries that have reduced the team’s depth on defense.

None of the three major free agents the Giants signed in the offseason have played in the preseason. Defensive tackle Rocky Bernard, who was on the non-football injury list until last week, expects to see action this weekend.

Defensive tackle Chris Canty (torn hamstring) and linebacker Michael Boley (hip surgery) are coming along slower.

“There are teams throughout the league that are dealing with the same problems we are dealing with,” Pierce said. “Guys getting nicked up at this time of year, guys getting back in the groove of it, and your body adjusting to the hitting, and the movement. By September 13th, guys will be ready and eager to go.”

Boley is still on the physically unable to perform list, and the NFL suspended him for the first game for a domestic issue before he joined the Giants.

Pierce insisted that the players are not worried about depth, saying almost every season starters get hurt and somebody steps up to take their place.

“You want to see guys flying to the ball,” Pierce said. “You gotta see the effort, you have to see the things we did three of the last four years when we were top 10 in defense. You want guys being physical, intimidating, getting after the quarterback, stopping the run, all the things that are fundamental of the defense. I think we have the ability to do it, but we have to go out there and do it.”

Cutler criticizes Hester after interception

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — One game into the preseason and already Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has had to smooth things out with one of his wide receivers.

Cutler commented to reporters about wide receiver Devin Hester’s failure to break up an interception on a pass that fell short Saturday night following the team’s 27-20 preseason loss to Buffalo. His remark seemed to rub some people the wrong way.

“Devin is more of a go-get-it guy; he is not really a back shoulder or jump-up-and-get-it [guy],” Cutler said Saturday. “You learn from it.

“We made some mistakes. It’s the first preseason game. Luckily enough, we have some time to correct them and keep going.”

The Bills’ Leodis McKelvin intercepted the pass.

Hester admitted Monday that Cutler’s comment upset him at first.

“But then he [Cutler] said he didn’t say it,” Hester said.

Hester said they’re just getting to know each other.

“It wasn’t criticism or anything like that,” Hester said. “He was saying, you are not a 6-8 receiver. You can’t go up and get everything. But we know you are the type of receiver if we throw it out there, you will go get it.”

Cutler was not available for comment. He is only made available to the media in Bears camp on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Offensive coordinator Ron Turner said Cutler should have checked down to a shorter receiver route when he had to slide up in the pocket on the play rather than put the ball up for grabs.

Nevertheless, Turner likes Cutler’s competitive attitude.

“I look at that as a good thing,” Turner said. “He’s got an edge about him that you better have if you’re going to be an elite quarterback in this league.”

Turner said occasionally he might need to talk to Cutler about being critical of teammates, but not every time.

“We don’t want to temper that too much,” Turner said. “Jay is an emotional guy and he’s a fiery guy and he’s a fiery competitor. That’s why he’s an elite quarterback.”

Cutler’s candid remarks got him into trouble when he played for Denver last year. Cutler went 5-for-10 Saturday for 64 yards with the one interception.

Coach Lovie Smith sought to call the entire matter forgotten.

“There are a lot of things said when we’re not playing the type of football we know we are capable of,” Smith said. “We went back to the practice field today. We have no issues except our team trying to get better.”

T.O. to miss next preseason game

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Terrell Owens will miss the Buffalo Bills’ preseason game against Chicago this weekend because of a sprained toe that has prevented him from practicing all week.

Coach Dick Jauron ruled Owens out of Saturday’s game after practice Thursday night, saying the toe is healing but the team doesn’t want to take any chances with the receiver aggravating the injury.

Though Jauron didn’t have a timetable for when Owens could resume practicing, Owens tweeted earlier in the day that he expects to return to the field as soon as Monday. He added that fans don’t need to worry about his injury.

Owens has missed three days of practice and not made himself available to reporters. While the team’s been practicing, Owens has been getting treatment in the Bills training facility.

He’s been out since jamming his toe in a 21-18 loss to Tennessee in the Hall of Fame game on Sunday. He had two catches for 27 yards in his Bills debut since signing a one-year $6.5 million deal with the team in March, shortly after being released by Dallas.

Reserve safety Ko Simpson’s status to play Saturday is uncertain after he was held out of practice because of an ankle injury.

Gasol injured with national team

Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol underwent surgery on the index finger of his left hand Monday after breaking it during practice with Spain’s national team, the Lakers confirmed.

Gasol will be sidelined at least three weeks.

Lakers spokesman John Black told the Los Angeles Times that according to Gasol’s agent, Arn Tellem, there were no issues with the surgery, which took place immediately after the injury occurred Monday.

The Spanish basketball federation said Tuesday that Gasol injured the finger while blocking a shot during the workout in preparation for the European Championships.

He will wear a splint for 20 days, but the federation did not say if he will play in the championships, which start Sept. 7 in Poland.

Gasol, however, hopes to do so.

“I want to be with my teammates and fight for the championship,” the Spanish news agency Efe quoted him as saying at a news conference in Cadiz. “I don’t see why I would have to drop out.

Gasol was a key part of the Lakers’ championship this past season, averaging 18.9 points and 9.6 rebounds during the regular season. Black said Gasol had spoken with the Lakers’ trainer, and the team was trying to get in touch with the surgeon who operated on Gasol.

“I have explained the situation to the Lakers, and they have the results,” Gasol said. “They aren’t pleased I am injured but I don’t think they’ll put obstacles in my way.”

Spain is the reigning world champion but lost to Russia in the final of the 2007 European Championship. Spain won the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, at which the United States won gold.Information from Reuters and The Associated Press.

Rolen shelved due to concussion

ST. LOUIS — Having played in only four games since being acquired by the Reds, third baseman Scott Rolen wanted anything but to go on the disabled list already. But head injuries rarely can follow timetables, and Cincinnati decided there was no other choice.

Rolen went on the 15-day DL on Tuesday retroactive to Saturday, due to a concussion, while Chris Dickerson was activated and started in center field.

“This concussion thing is out of my realm of being able to grasp,” Rolen said. “This isn’t playing through a hamstring or playing through a shoulder. This is something I need to pay attention to and listen to some people. I need to do the right thing.”

On Aug. 2 vs. the Rockies, Rolen was beaned by a Jason Marquis fastball and came out of the game. He missed two games, returned Wednesday and hit a homer in the first pitch he saw from the Cubs’ Rich Harden.

But symptoms returned while the Reds were in San Francisco, and Rolen was sent back to Cincinnati on Saturday and diagnosed with a concussion. Testing has shown limited improvement.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said on Monday that he wanted to avoid placing Rolen on the DL, but the team apparently changed directions.

“He’s not seeing much improvement from what he showed,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “He got to a point where he’s stuck with the headaches. He’s kind of in that zone kind of thing. Walt was going to wait a day or two. But we’re short on the bench. We’re short in the bullpen.”

Rolen met with Baker in the skipper’s office for over 30 minutes. Rolen accepted the decision without complaint.

“Do I want to be on the DL? Of course not,” Rolen said. “At the same time, I think it’s the right thing. It’s not something I want to battle with down the road.

“I thought it was OK, came back and tried to play. Then it went the wrong way. I played two games and did exercises, thought I was back and fine. I was kind of in la-la land in San Francisco and had lingering effects. This is the right thing, whether I like it or not.”

Minutes prior to the July 31 Trade Deadline, Rolen and cash were acquired in a trade with the Blue Jays for third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and young pitchers Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart. The move, the club said, was made to boost the club’s chemistry this season and help bring improvement in 2010.

For now, that will have to wait. Rolen still gets headaches and was told the best way to get over a concussion was inactivity. He plans to heed the advice.

“They’re not constant headaches,” Rolen said. “There will be a minute where I feel great and think, ‘You know what? This isn’t here. I’m OK and everything is good. I will take some BP and get back out on the field.’ Two hours later, I’m kind of squinting from the lights in the room with a headache.”

Rolen was 2-for-14 (.143) with one homer and two RBIs in his four games with Cincinnati. He batted .320 in 88 games for Toronto before the trade.

By his estimate, Rolen has now had three concussions in his life. The 34-year-old believed another one came while he was a member of the Cardinals. As a kid, he also recalled being knocked out during a pole vaulting mishap at school.

“They all count,” Rolen said. From MLB

Parker help France beat Finland

Tony Parker(notes) returned from injury to help France beat Finland 82-72 in a European Championship qualifying match Saturday.

The San Antonio Spurs point guard, who missed Wednesday’s 80-77 overtime win over Italy due to a right ankle sprain, was used sparingly by coach Vincent Collet.

He only played the first five minutes as France consolidated its position at the top of qualifying Group B in the Euro playoffs.

The team finishing first in Group B takes on the winner of Group A—Bosnia, Belgium or Portugal. The European Championships are next month in Poland.

Parker had wanted to play Wednesday, but the Spurs brought him back to San Antonio for tests after he was injured in a collision with an Austrian player last month. Parker has said tests showed no signs of ligament tears or serious complications.

Cubs scratch Zambrano from Friday turn

DENVER — Chicago Cubs right-hander Carlos Zambrano was scratched about 15 minutes before his scheduled start Friday night against the Colorado Rockies with a lower back problem.

Left-hander Sean Marshall replaced Zambrano.

Zambrano, 7-4 with a 3.35 ERA, worked a season-low three innings in his last start against Florida on Aug. 1, leaving the game lower back stiffness. He gave up two runs and three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Before Friday’s game, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said there were no concerns about Zambrano’s back.

“He hasn’t complained about anything,” Piniella said. “He’s been doing his exercises. He should be nice and strong for tonight’s performance.”

However, a team spokesman said Zambrano came off the field shortly before the game’s scheduled start with a recurrence of lower back stiffness. From The Associated Press.

Ugg boots guide to winter fashion

The moral for the savvy shopper? A few appropriately outstanding pieces will add the necessary pop to your otherwise unchanged wardrobe.

Julia Seidl, creative director of Stylehog.com, “your online guide to runway fashion on a budget,” suggests that investing in a few key pieces can sufficiently update nearly any wardrobe.

“Thanks to Michelle Obama, the structured and tailored shift dress has quickly replaced the power suit as the go-to piece’ for working women everywhere,” Seidl wrote in an email.

And when it comes to footwear, Seidl says, there’s only one choice.

“The bootie (the hybrid between shoes and boots) has become the hottest footwear of the season. Whether worn with pants for the day or tights and a skirt for a night out, the bootie is the only shoe/boot you need this season,” Seidl wrote.

It’s tough to talk boots without uttering the dreaded three-letter word that is still making little dollar signs pop up in eyes of shoe salesmen everywhere: UGG.

“The UGGboots have continued to be popular,” said Bob Scanlon of Oneonta’s Sport Tech. “They keep coming back for them.”

Seidl, among others, would just as soon this wasn’t the case. “UGGs are like an ex-boyfriend we seem to bump into everywhere we go,” she wrote. “We would have thought this trend would have disappeared into the fashion abyss a long time ago. But judging by what we see on the street, this trend is as popular as ever.”

Before picking up your own pair, however, consider the possible backlash. There is an Anti-UGG Boots League on Facebook, an anti-UGG petition circulating on the Internet, anti-UGG T-shirts and even an anti-UGG public service announcement on YouTube (created “as a mock campaign against the UGG boot trend within our pop culture”).

Accessories offer an affordable means of updating your look, and this season’s picks are anything but mild. The usual standards of purses and jewelry have been joined by brooches, gloves and even hats (yes, ladies: hats) as the season’s smart sartorial choices.

Kobe again Shaq on Christmas

NEW YORK (AP) - The NBA is bringing Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal together again for Christmas — this time joined by LeBron James.

Bryant and the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers will host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Dec. 25, one of the highlights of the 2009-10 NBA schedule released Tuesday.

It will be the fourth time in the five years since their partnership ended that Bryant and O’Neal will meet on Christmas. Traded to Cleveland in June, O’Neal will return to Los Angeles this year with James, who succeeded Bryant as MVP last season.

O’Neal and James will play their first game together in the NBA season opener, hosting the Boston Celtics on Oct. 27. The four-game slate that night concludes when the Lakers open their title defense against No. 1 draft pick Blake Griffin and the Clippers.

Defending Eastern Conference champion Orlando opens Oct. 28 against Philadelphia, then goes on the road two nights later to visit New Jersey, giving Vince Carter a quick return to his former home.

The Magic will visit the Lakers for an NBA finals rematch Jan. 18 as part of the schedule on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Los Angeles will play at Orlando on March 7 for the first time since winning the title in June.

Orlando also plays on Christmas, hosting Boston in a matchup of the last two East champions. Miami at New York, the Clippers at Phoenix and Denver at Portland round out that day’s action. From Associated Press.

Oswalt’s back still hurting after bullpen session

HOUSTON (AP) - Astros ace Roy Oswalt will skip his next scheduled start because he still felt pain in his lower back after a bullpen session Monday.

Forced to leave his previous outing because of an irritated disk, Oswalt was scheduled to start Tuesday night against San Francisco. After throwing 30 to 40 pitches in the bullpen, he wasn’t ready to go.

Oswalt said he would meet with doctors on Tuesday and throw another bullpen session on Wednesday.

“I’m not 100 percent,” Oswalt said. “I just don’t feel good.”

Oswalt (6-4, 3.61 ERA) left in the second inning of Houston’s 11-6 win in Chicago on July 28.

Houston manager Cecil Cooper said right-hander Felipe Paulino will be recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to start Tuesday’s game. The team will announce a corresponding move after Monday’s game.

Oswalt is due to start again on Saturday against Milwaukee. General manager Ed Wade left open the possibility that Oswalt could go on the disabled list, retroactive to July 28.

“We leave everything available,” Wade said. “We’ll see how he feels on Wednesday. If he’s continuing to signal that he’s having some discomfort, then we’ll huddle up at that point and have a serious discussion about the potential of doing that.”

The Astros hope slugger Lance Berkman and left-hander Wandy Rodriguez return this weekend.

Berkman has been on the disabled list since July 23 with a left calf strain.

“I can definitely still feel the injury, but it’s definitely not as sharp as it was,” Berkman said.

Rodriguez (10-6, 2.63 ERA) left Saturday’s loss in St. Louis with a strained right hamstring. He threw on flat ground and jogged before Monday’s game. Depending on Oswalt, Rodriguez could start again on Saturday or Sunday.

“Wandy, I’m hoping he can take his turn,” Cooper said. “We have to protect these two guys. That’s our 1 and our 2 (starters).”

The Astros also announced that backup outfielder Darin Erstad will play for the team’s Double-A affiliate in Corpus Christi on Tuesday and Wednesday. Erstad has been on the disabled list since July 19 with a left hamstring strain. From Associated Press.

NHL looking into Marian Hossa’s 12-year contract with Blackhawks

CHICAGO - The NHL is investigating Marian Hossa’s 12-year, US$62.8 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The league confirmed Friday that it is looking into the deal, but would have no further comment until the investigation is completed.

An Ottawa newspaper first reported Thursday night that the league is studying whether the contract circumvents the salary cap and the collective bargaining agreement.

“The Chicago Blackhawks vehemently dispute any implication that the team has in any way violated the collective bargaining agreement or had any intention whatsoever to circumvent the salary cap,” the team said in a statement.

“The Marian Hossa contract is a legitimate contract that was approved by the NHL. We are not at all concerned by the investigation and are confident the NHL will conclude that there is absolutely no evidence that the Blackhawks intended to circumvent the salary cap.”

Hossa’s contract results in a $5.23 million cap hit each year over the length of the deal, according the report. That’s despite a lot of the money being paid early in the contract with Hossa making $7.9 million annually for the first seven years before his salary tapers off.

The 30-year-old, who scored 40 goals last season with the Detroit Red Wings, is expected to miss the beginning of the season after having surgery on his shoulder.from:canadian press.

Lakers re-sign Lamar Odom

ESPN reports: Free agent forward Lamar Odom will return to the Los Angeles Lakers, an NBA source said Thursday. One source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com the four-year deal is worth $33 million if the Lakers exercise the final season. One source close to the process said Odom will come away with a guaranteed $27 million from the new contract, matching the original value of the three-year, $27 million deal Lakers owner Jerry Buss pulled off the table earlier this month. It’s believed that the structure of the new deal calls for Odom to earn $25 million over the first three seasons, with the Lakers owing him $2 million in the fourth year if they elect not to pick up their team option.

Blackhawks’ Hossa to have shoulder surgery; will miss season’s first two weeks

Marian Hossa, the Chicago Blackhawks’ biggest free-agent acquisition, will have surgery Friday on his right shoulder to repair a small tear in his rotator cuff. Hossa is expected to miss the 2009-10 NHL season’s first two months.

Word of the surgery comes a day after the Blackhawks acknowledge the injury. New Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said the team hoped Hossa’s shoulder problem could avoid surgery.

Hossa, a right winger, signed a 12-year, $62.8 million contract on July 1, the opening day of NHL free agency.

Hossa had a shoulder problem while playing with the Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2007-08 season. He played through it last season with the Detroit Red Wings.

“Marian’s injury did not respond sufficiently to our non-operative treatment over the last three weeks so we have collectively decided [Thursday] to go ahead with the surgery,” Bowman said in a statement. “Marian is a franchise player and we want what is best for him and the Blackhawks long-term. This was a mutual decision and one we feel very confident is the right one.”

Hossa led the Detroit Red Wings with 40 goals last season before signing the richest contract in Hawks history.

“After consulting with my family and the Blackhawks, I have no doubt that this is the correct decision,” Hossa said. “I plan on being a member of the Blackhawks for a very long time, which is why I want to get this done and begin my career in Chicago at 100 percent.”

Hossa has 719 points in 775 career games over 11 seasons with the Ottawa Senators (1997-2004), Thrashers (2005-08), Penguins (2007-08) and Red Wings (2008-09).– from the Associated Press and Chicago Tribune

Miami Heat coach asked about Wade

MIAMI (AP)—Making his first trip to his mother’s native Philippines in 35 years, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra heard a familiar question.

What does Dwyane Wade’s(notes) future hold?

That’s what Spoelstra was asked Tuesday after he, Heat assistants David Fizdale and Chad Kammerer, and others held a clinic for about 200 kids from the Filipino city of Zamboanga. The kids quizzed Spoelstra on several topics, including whether Wade would stay with the Heat past next season.

Spoelstra said he thought he was “answering questions at a postgame press conference.”

Spoelstra is part of a sports envoy trip to the Philippines organized by the U.S. State Department and the NBA. Spoelstra, the NBA’s first Filipino-American coach, hasn’t been to the nation since he was 3.

Just another Blog.com weblog * Home * About Four-run seventh lifts Cards, Carpenter

ST. LOUIS — Chris Carpenter survived seven-plus tough innings and Matt Holliday put the Cardinals ahead for good with a first-inning double in his home debut as the Cardinals beat the Dodgers, 6-1, on Monday night at Busch Stadium.

Carpenter used four double plays in seven innings to escape several jams as he won his fourth straight decision to improve to 9-3 on the season. The righty gave up nine hits and had multiple baserunners in four of his eight innings but was aided by the four double plays, including a nifty 3-6-3 twin killing by Albert Pujols and Brendan Ryan to end the seventh inning.

The former Cy Young Award winner, who hasn’t lost since a 6-3 setback to San Francisco on June 30, left after a leadoff double by Manny Ramirez in the eighth. Carpenter lowered his ERA to 2.19.

Holliday, who finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk, has now doubled in each of his first four games with the Cardinals. He received a lengthy standing ovation before batting with a runner on first and two outs in the first and promptly doubled off the center-field wall to score Mark DeRosa and put the Cardinals ahead, 1-0.

Each of the Cardinals’ newly acquired players — DeRosa, Holliday and Julio Lugo — had an RBI hit. An infield single by Lugo in the second made it 2-0 before a home run by DeRosa in the seventh made it 3-1. The home run for DeRosa was his fifth with the Cardinals, all of which have come in the past seven games.

Ryan went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the second four-hit game of his career, and outfielder Rick Ankiel continued his hot streak with a 2-for-4 night that included an RBI double in the Cardinals’ four-run seventh inning that blew the game open. From: By B.J. Rains / MLB.com

Blackhawks’ Hossa to undergo shoulder surgery

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Tuesday a voluntary recall of Buster Brown & Co.’s children’s clog shoes.

According to the agency and the shoe company, the children’s shoes, which are shaped like cars, were recalled because the wheels can detach and pose a choking risk. The recall encompassed about 1.4 million pair of shoes manufactured by Brown Shoe Co., according to the CPSC announcement.

“Brown Shoe is committed to our customers’ safety, and though the shoes met the regulatory standards in place for quality testing, on
ce we realized that the wheel component could create a choking hazard among children, we volunteered to undertake the recall,” said Gary Rich, president of wholesale for Brown Shoe. “We have partnered with the CPSC to ensure parents have the information they need to return the shoes for a full refund.”

The shoes were made in China and sold at a number of national retailers, including Famous Footwear, JCPenney, Meijer, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart for $10 to $25. The eight styles in the recall were sold between August 2007 and June 2009. from: Footwear news.
